What's in the color library

This library collects 245 named colors — the 140 standard CSS keywords plus rebeccapurple, together with a curated set of the design and paint names people actually search for: coral, teal, sage, terracotta, mauve, burgundy, mint, navy, charcoal and many more. Each color has its own page showing the hex code, RGB, HSL, HSV, CMYK and OKLCH values, the closest web-safe color, a full set of color harmonies (complementary, analogous, triadic, tetradic and more), light-to-dark shade and tint ramps, a contrast readout against black and white, and the handful of named colors nearest to it. Everything is pre-computed, so the pages load instantly and work offline.

Colors are grouped into families — red, orange, brown, yellow, green, blue, cyan, purple, pink, plus white, gray and black — and within each family they run roughly from light to dark. If you know the family you want, start from a family page above; if you have a specific name in mind, use the search box in the header, which matches names and hex values.

Finding the right color

If you already have a hex code and want a name for it, paste it into the color converter — it reports the closest named color — or use color name from image to name a color from a screenshot or photo. If you have a name and want to build something with it, open its page here and follow the link into the color picker or palette generator for a full scheme. Color names are reference information — the CSS keywords are defined in the specification, and the wider design names follow common usage. Before using any color for text, check the pairing against its background in the contrast checker to confirm it meets WCAG AA.
