What people use a red screen for

Protect your night vision

The human eye keeps its dark adaptation under dim red light, which is why observatories, planetariums, submarines and aircraft cockpits use red instrument lighting. A dim red screen lets you read a star chart, take notes or check a camera without resetting the 20–30 minutes it takes your eyes to adjust to the dark.

Test the red sub-pixels of a display

A pure red field (#FF0000) lights only the red sub-pixels and leaves green and blue completely off, so a dead or weak red element shows as a black or dark dot. Repeat with a green screen and blue screen for a full sub-pixel sweep.

Stage, mood and alert lighting

A red screen is instant atmosphere — a darkroom-style glow, a warning light for a stream or event, dramatic mood lighting for photos and video, or a themed backdrop.

As a test pattern, a flat red field makes a dead or stuck pixel jump out, and it exercises the red sub-pixel.
