What is a white screen?

A white screen is simply a web page filled edge to edge with one solid color — White, hex #FFFFFF, or rgb(255, 255, 255). It is a very light, neutral color: in HSL it sits at 0° hue, 0% saturation and 100% lightness, and its relative luminance is 100.0%. white is one of the standard CSS color names, so it renders identically in every browser.

Turning a display into a single flat color is more useful than it sounds — as a light source, a test pattern, a video or photo backdrop, or ambient lighting. This page is that color, ready to open full screen or download, with no app to install and nothing uploaded anywhere.

What people use a white screen for

Check a screen for dead pixels, dust and backlight bleed

A full white field is the fastest way to audit a display. Dead or stuck pixels show as tiny coloured or black dots, dust and fingerprints become obvious, and on an LCD you can judge how even the backlight is across the panel. Do the same check with a black screen and the primary red, green and blue screens to catch every kind of sub-pixel fault.

Use it as a light: tracing pad, fill light or flashlight

Because white light contains every colour, a white screen at full brightness works as a small softbox. Tape thin paper to a tablet showing a white screen and it becomes a tracing light-pad; prop a phone or laptop showing white next to your face to add fill light on a video call; or just use it as an emergency flashlight in a dark room.

A clean background for photos, scans and video

Photographers use a white screen behind small products for a bright, even backdrop, and it gives a neutral, distraction-free background for webcam calls, screen recordings and live streams. A phone showing a white screen also makes a serviceable document-scanning surface.

Beyond that, a white screen is handy for all the things any solid-color screen is good for:

Using a white screen on any device

Phone & tablet — open this page in your browser and tap Open full screen; on iPhone and iPad, turn the auto-lock off first if you want it to stay on, and hide the browser bars by tapping full screen. Laptop & desktop — full screen hides the taskbar and menu bar for a true edge-to-edge white field; move the window to a second monitor first if you are using it as bias lighting. TV & projector — open the page in the built-in browser, or download the 4K image and open it from a USB stick or a casting app for a rock-steady white screen.

White screen — FAQ

What is the hex code for a white screen?

A white screen uses the color White, hex #FFFFFFrgb(255, 255, 255). The full-screen view and every download use exactly that value, and white also works as a CSS color name.

How do I make my whole screen white?

Open this page and tap Open full screen (or tap the preview). Your browser fills the entire display with white and hides its own toolbars. Press Esc, or tap the screen, to come back. It works on phones, tablets, laptops, desktops and most smart-TV browsers.

Can I download the white screen in 1080p or 4K?

Yes. Tap a resolution preset — 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 4K (3840 × 2160) — or type any custom width and height, then tap Download PNG or Download JPG. A solid white image stays a very small file even at 4K.

Is the white screen free to use?

Completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. The image is created in your browser and never uploaded, so you can use the white screen for wallpapers, video backgrounds, streaming, signage, photography or print at no cost.

Can I use a white screen to check for dead pixels?

Yes. Open the white screen full screen and look closely for dots that stay the wrong color — a stuck or dead pixel breaks the flat field. For a complete check, repeat with the black, red, green, blue screens too.
