What is a blue screen?
A blue screen is simply a web page filled edge to edge with one solid color — Blue, hex #0000FF, or rgb(0, 0, 255). It is a dark, cool color: in HSL it sits at 240° hue, 100% saturation and 50% lightness, and its relative luminance is 7.2%. blue is one of the standard CSS color names, so it renders identically in every browser.

What people use a blue screen for
Bias lighting behind a TV or monitor
A dim blue or blue-white screen placed behind your display acts as bias lighting: it raises the light level around the screen so the on-screen contrast feels gentler, which measurably reduces eye strain in a dark room. An old phone or tablet running a blue screen is an easy way to do it.
The blue-screen gag
A full blue field is the internet's favourite fake "blue screen of death" prank — open it full screen on a colleague's unattended computer for a harmless scare.
Test blue sub-pixels and demonstrate blue light
Pure blue (#0000FF) drives only the blue sub-pixels, so it exposes a dead blue element, and it is a simple way to show how much blue a screen emits before and after a night-light filter.
As a test pattern, a dark blue field is best for spotting backlight bleed and IPS glow on an LCD, or stuck "always-on" pixels on an OLED.

Does a blue screen save battery?
On phones and laptops with an OLED or AMOLED display, yes — dark pixels use very little power and true black uses none, so a blue screen draws less than a bright one. On a normal LCD the backlight stays on regardless, so the saving is small.
