What people use a graphite screen for
Graphite is dark enough that a graphite screen gives off very little light — on an OLED or AMOLED phone the dim pixels also draw little power, which makes it a good always-on or bedside screen.
Graphite is a muted, low-saturation color, so it makes a calm, distraction-free background for focus, reading or a video call, and it does not cast a strong tint onto faces.
Black screens save power on OLED and AMOLED displays (each black pixel is switched off), reveal backlight bleed and IPS glow on LCDs, and cut glare and eye strain at night. A true-black field is also the go-to background for photography, cinema-style letterboxing, and hiding a screen that has to stay on. Mid-gray fields are the neutral reference for panel-uniformity and colour work.
As a test pattern, a dark graphite field is best for spotting backlight bleed and IPS glow on an LCD, or stuck "always-on" pixels on an OLED.
